Best CV Format for Jobs in Pakistan
Reverse chronological, functional, or hybrid? Here is a practical way to choose, with the job advertisement taking priority over any general rule.
Start with reverse chronological
A reverse-chronological layout is a useful default when your recent experience is relevant: list the latest role first and work backward.
It gives a reviewer a clear timeline across industries, but an employer's prescribed form or portal fields should take priority.
Put company name, job title, city, and dates together. Label fixed-term or contract work honestly so short engagements are not mistaken for unexplained job changes.
When a functional CV makes sense
If you are changing fields, for example from teaching to HR, a skills-first layout can help. Lead with a strong summary and core competencies before job history.
Fresh graduates with little paid work sometimes lead with projects and internships. Keep it to one page and still include education near the top.
Avoid using a functional format to hide dates. If a gap needs context, a short honest explanation is clearer than a confusing timeline.
Useful sections for Pakistani applications
Contact details with a Pakistani mobile number (+92), a professional email, and city. LinkedIn is optional but useful for IT and multinational roles.
Include degree, institution, and year when they are relevant or requested. Add grades only when they strengthen the application or the employer asks for them.
Skills should be scannable: software, languages, certifications. Separate technical skills from soft skills so nothing gets lost in a long paragraph.
Length and file naming
Aim for one focused page early in your career; use a second page when relevant experience, projects, or regulated credentials genuinely need the space.
Name your file clearly, for example FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf, so the recipient can identify it outside the application system.
Use consistent date format, preferably Month Year to Month Year. Mixed formats look sloppy on a quick screen.
Format checklist
A quick pass before you send the file:
- Latest role first, with company, title, city, and dates on one line.
- Pick one layout and keep fonts and spacing consistent throughout.
- One page under five years of work, two pages for senior roles.
- Name the file FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf.
